Recommend a joystick to play X-Wing Collectors Edition...?

I have an old(!) Pentium 233 laptop with Windows 98, a 9-pin plug and one USB 1.0 port, which I got second-hand about 5 years back.

A little while later, I bought the Collector's Edition of X-Wing (including the B-wing add-on and TIE fighter), which I installed successfully, but was never able to play because (1) I didn't have a joystick, (2) or any idea what would work with what I have, and (3) I was living in a country where you couldn't trust the electricity supply, never mind the computer supply shops.

Now I'm back in civilisation (taking care of no. 3) and want to kick me some Sith butt, but all the joysticks on sale new seem to have about 50 buttons, and require a large chunk of processing memory to function.

Wireless is right out, and USB 2.0 won't work, so I probably need to buy something second-hand, but (2) still applies... Any ideas?

(Better still, if you have one to sell, stick it on Ebay, and we'll talk...!)

Look for a Microsoft Sidewinder Pro, the old ones came with either the game / midi port plug or I am sure I had a USB version, this will have been USB 1.0

The nine pin plug on your laptop will almost certainly be a serial port and I cannot remeber any joysticks that worked on that type of port. There used to be available "game cards" for laptops but they are all long gone now.

The software that came with it was very light and I played through the very games you mention.

You may have trouble with USB on Win98 though so make sure you download and install the USB support pack. If memory serves, it is also on the Win98 disk somewhere.

Best bet is to quit to dos and play them there if possible, but then forget Sidewinders and USB etc.

Nice to see that great games like these live on :-)

You'll need to check with the main brands for that time period for best support. At that time you had the MS Sidewinder and Saitek have had a good rep for joysticks. Although at the moment pretty much all joysticks are USB so you'll need to find a second hand or old stick somewhere that still uses the old MIDI serial port.

For X-wing I used my Saitek SP550, which worked fine.

Just remember that you can use USB2.0 joysticks on 1.0 plugs, just they'll run at the slower 1.0 speed, which is about 1.5MB/s

You will need a joystick or gamepad that plug in the serial port on your soundcard in order to play older games. Your best bet is Ebay or search the net. Logitech and Creative lab use to makes them. There may be some company outside the US like Taiwan or China that still making those. If you couldn't get any, your next choice is to buy a PCI addon card that has usb port and use that with a joystick/gamepad. Get a real simple one.
