It's a problem on their end, they have AOL.

AOL *used* to come set up (default) to compress images to an AOL art image before a website got fetched, for example. This may be playing a role, but I haven't used AOL since 5.0.

I can guarantee it's just another AOL annoyance though. I'll look for more info.

Here's a few posts from a forum link I found while using google, curiously one of the members asks if AOL is a factor, unfortunately it wasn't in this problem so it wasn't explained further.

"Recently a number of people have told me they can't open jpegs I send with Mail.

It seems if the pictures do not have thumbnail previews they're ok, but if they do then they might not open."

"JonClark2, is AOL a factor in this problem ?"

"Yup, the file extension is included and the attachment is Windows-friendly. It wasn't emailed to an aol address."

By Windows-friendly he means the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg and the extension isn't improper. Still looking into it.

...here's another post on a different forum about this:

"Subject: sending jpg's to aol problems

    hello

my uncle is trying to send a jpg with aol, the problem is that the PC user that is getting the file only gets a mime file. the problem seems to be with the PC i think. any thoughts"

    No solution...

Ok...I think we have a solution and a few possible causes:

    A. FILE SIZE ATTACHMENT YOU CAN SENT THROUGH E-MAIL

You might have already reach the limit of file attach on AOL.

The largest piece of e-mail that you can send or accept from the Internet is 16 megabytes. This includes the message text, headers and the attachment combined. If the file you are trying to transfer is exceeds 16 MB, you will need to either compress the file or split it into smaller parts.

To find and download third-party software for other compressing or decompressing needs, go to AOL Keyword: Zip. You'll find instructions for using these programs in the documentation that accompanies them.

    B. TRY TO EMBED THE PICTURE ON E-MAIL.

To insert a picture in an e-mail, please follow the steps below.

    1. On the AOL Toolbar, click WRITE.

    2. Click the CAMERA icon, then select INSERT A PICTURE or INSERT A BACKGROUND from the menu that appears.

    3. Select the My Computer, My Pictures on AOL, or Pictures I've Received tab, then click a folders on the left hand side of the screen.

    4. Select the picture(s) by clicking in the checkbox next to the picture (or click Select All).

    5. Click INSERT. Your picture(s) will be included in your AOL e-mail.

    NOTES:

    - Inserting a picture into your e-mail places the image in the body of your e-mail. Any text you type appears above or below the picture.

    - Adding an image as a background picture in your e-mail fills the background behind your message with the picture. Any text you type appears on the background picture.

    - The following file types are supported for pictures: .art, .jpg, .gif, .bmp

    - Only members of AOL using version 4.0 or above and Internet users will be able to see the image files you insert in your e-mail.

    - If you want to send an image file to an AOL member who is using an earlier version of the software, you will have to attach the file to your e-mail.
