Why is everyone looking for double baby names?

I just don't get why everyone nowadays wants to give their baby 2 names instead of 1, I mean just look at the baby names section on yahoo answers and everyone is looking for 2 names! what happened to the good old single name! why complicate life, isn't 1 name enough?

It is a fad and so many people are sheep. I don't think that they realize that the baby will be a person someday and have to live with that name. Names can make a difference. After all how many corporate giants are named Xerxes Phondodon. Or Billy Ray, or Bobbie Joe?

I still have to stop for a minute when I meet a 60 year old named Scotty.

It's not fashion. I know a lot of people over 50, and all of them have 2 names!

One name would be enough if specific names where not so common

The thing is, people usually name their babies with what is on fashion at the time (60 years ago was Frank, 40 years ago lots of Kevins, then the Michael's era, now it seems to be the Taylors and Jonahs and Hunters....). Plus many people have same lastnames... Having a middle name gives a little of 'uniqueness' in the whole thing.

And if you are talking about lastnames, that comes up because mothers want to give their lastname some continuity, as well as the fathers.

Are you referring to having two first names or to having middle names? Middle names have been around forever and - at least here in America - it is very common to have a first name and a middle name.

Now if you are referring to people who give their children two first names AND a middle name, then yeah, that's a little crazy.

Case in point - Sarah Jessica Michelle Williams.

    That's just too many names!

Not everybody wants their kid to have "just" two names.

    For example:

In my case i'm dedicating my daughter's second name to my grandma who died when i was really young. I hardly remember her because she was very sick. But from what i can remember, i know she loved me and we always had a great time.

    I don't have a middle name.

I was born and grew up in Germany and here it is considered "weird" and "different" to have a second or middle name.

Let's say you'd want you son's name to be Michael William (just an example). NOBODY will ever call him Michael William, right?! Everybody will consider him as Michael or even Mike.

So why get a second/middle name?

    I really have no idea!!!

If you don't have a name of a saint, then your parents have to choose one more name for you to the ceremony of baptism in Hungary...
