Baptized with water or baptized with Spirit,what's the difference??

The Bible refers to both kinds of baptism. Water baptism is what we do to symbolize our faith in Jesus Christ and a changed life. Dunking down below the water symbolizes death to the old self, and rising up out of the water symbolizes new life in Christ.

Baptism by the Spirit is what the Spirit of God does when someone comes to faith in Jesus Christ. It is the actual transformation that takes place.

When you are baptized (submerged in water) you are taking part in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. You are putting on Christ. When you arise from the water you have the Spirit. You must be born again of Spirit and water to be born again. The baptism of water is NOT just a symbol or outward sign to show others afterward.

John 3:5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit baptism occured 2 times...On Pentecost to give power to the apostles..Acts 1:8 and 2:1-4...And at Cornelious' house to show that gentiles accepted...Acts 11:15-1 and 15:7-8

Later Paul wrote that there is now only one baptism in Ephesians 4:4

Baptism in the name of Christ is water baptism...Acts 10:47-48Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

Acts 2:38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mark 16:16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

The word "baptism" is actually a transiliteration of the Greek word "baptizo". The Greek word means to immerse or wash. John the Baptist immersed people in water (baptized) when they repented of their sins. This was to symbolize that their sins were "washed" away. Baptism was an external sign of what God had done as a consquence of their repentance. The church baptizes in water in the name of Jesus Christ or the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to also show that through Christ God has washed their sins away.

Baptism in the Spirit means that the Holy Spirit has come upon someone (immersed them). There are numerous ways this can be taken. Everyone who becomes a Christian receives the Spirit. Most evangelicals call this the "baptism of the Spirit". Others (charismatics) think that the Baptism in the Spirit is something evidenced by speaking in tongues. This is a kind of second blessing beyond the initial salvation. But Paul points out in 1 Corinthians 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free- and all were made to drink of one Spirit. There is some controversy over the Greek preposition translated as "in" in the text I used. Some translators say it should be translated "by". But that doesn't make grammatical or theological sense. The Holy Spirit isn't the one immersing us into the body of Christ. Rather because we are immersed or overwhelmed with the Spirit we are made part of the body of Christ. I could go into a long explanation of the Greek preposition but it probably wouldn't make sense.

It is also possible for someone to be "baptized by the Spirit" or receive the Spirit before being baptized with water. See Acts 10 where the crowd received the Spirit before they were baptized in water. It is also possible for someone to be baptized with water and not be baptized with the Spirit. Although baptism is a confession of conversion I have seen people make false confessions. Also baptism with water shouldn't be seen as something magical. Paul actually states at one point that he was glad he had not baptized anyone with water because he didn't want to give people the impression that he was something special 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

So baptism with water is the outward sign of the spiritual reality of the forgiveness of sins and salvation in Christ. Baptism with the Spirit, or receiving the Spirit, is the person of God coming and dwelling inside of the Christian to empower the believer to live for God. The two however can be linked when someone is baptized with water as part of their conversion to Christ. If it is a true conversion then the Holy Spirit also baptizes them or indwells in them.

when a believer is baptized in water this is a sign to the world showing that believer's faith in jesus. When a believer is baptized with the spirit then the spirit of jesus begins to work in them. They are accepted into the body of christ. They are a christian.

one can receive the baptism of the spirit before the baptism of water. It says so in the bible.

All who come to God in The Way He prescribes receive His free gift of Salvation.... at this time the Holy Spirit indwells the new believer and that is the Baptizim of The holy Spirit.... When a believer makes the public decliration of Faith it is by being emmersed in water. it is a symbolic act only and not the act of salvation. It symbolizes the acceptance of Christs Death, Burial, and Reserection. Some sects / denominations make it a requirement for membership to be baptized in their way. Others accept those who have been baptized elsewhere but who are accepting the of the doctrins of the sect they wish to join.

The Baptizim of The Spirit is between God and the individual in any case. When God accept an individual they become of TheChurch of which Jesus The Christ is The Head... only those of The Church will enter Heaven...regardless of what sect/denomination they may join in worrship of God.

Baptize with water to show man you are committed to Jesus.

Baptized by the Holy Spirit of God after you have accepted Jesus as your personal savior.

Can only be understood by people that have the Holy Spirit.

Totally confused yet?

Well, baptism in water is the initiation ritual into the Kingdom of God. It is symbol of your death to self and your death to the world's ways. It does not make you righteous before God. The blood of Jesus, through faith in His blood, does that. But just like real death is where your spirit flies truly free from the reins of the earth, this baptism, a symbol of death, is where the devil must set you free from the the world's ways that you used to practice. So that's water baptism.

Baptism in the Spirit is not salvation either. The Holy Spirit is the agent of salvation, the midwife always present at the new birth, if you will. When someone makes Jesus his/her Savior and Ruler, the Holy Spirit enters his/her heart to live there. "Receive ye the Holy Ghost" Jesus said, John 20:22. This session of Jesus with His believers fell AFTER His resurrection and BEFORE His ascension to heaven.

But, in this same period of time, the same Jesus the Christ said, "tarry ye here in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high." (Luke 24:49) And ' "...but wait for the promise of the Father," which, saith he, "ye have heard of me. For John truly baptised with water, but you SHALL BE baptised with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." ' (Acts 1:4b-5)

So there is A) The point of initial faith, where the Holy Spirit indwells you, John 20:22

There is B) The ritual of baptism, symbolizing your death, the setting you free from your sinful past, and your resurrection to a new way of life.

And then there is C)The Baptism of the Holy Spirit, where, like a glass of water in a sink with the water running and overflowing it, Jesus' promise of His Holy Spirit power overwhelms the life of the believer.

These three things can happen within seconds of each-other, or they can be spread out over a period of years. Sadly, many good believers never get to experience the real Baptism in the Holy Spirit, because they are not taught about it, so they never seek it at all.

The Holy Spirit baptizes (submerses) you into the body of Christ.

The water baptism is a picture of what happened in the Spirit baptism.

Water baptism is to show what has happened to you on the inside. It symbolizes Being buried with Christ and being raised with Christ (Romans 6:3-4) Baptized in the Spirit is like going to the next level in your walk with God. It gives you the gifts of the spirit, healing, tongues, prophecy etc. (1Corinthians 12:1-31)

Baptism by water = A proper Baptism is done by an authorized Priesthood Holder (someone who is officially representing God) - The person is submerged completely in the water - which represents the death, burial, and resurrection...also it makes them clean spiritually - baptism by water lets a persons sins be 'washed away'.

Baptism of the Spirit = After receiving baptism by water -the gift of the Holy Ghost is given by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. (Usually the person sits on a chair and the Priesthood Holder(s) lay their hands upon his head and give the person the Gift of the Holy Ghost) - It is also sometimes referred to as the "baptism by fire" because one of the things the Holy Ghost does is that it "sanctifies" (...as a visual image...consider a needle being sterilized by a flame....afterwards the needle is clean)
