Anyone have any real solution for low HDL Cholesterol?
My raw cholesterol numbers are not that bad. 190 total and 115 LDL, and I have some buildup in my coronary arteries. I took a statin for a year.......NOTHING, no difference. Quit the statin on my own and started taking flush free niacin, lowered total C to 165, LDL to 85. HDL still in the toilet. I do some aerobic and some weight training exercises, no difference. As I understand, raisin HDL is extremely difficult. Pfizer just gave up on Torcetrapib after sinking hundreds of millions into the project. Any good suggestions besides the typical snake oil remedies. I'm asking for 1st person experience, please.
My HDL stays from 24 to 28, and I'm 59 years old.
In reference to some of your answers, I do take a lot of vitamins, minerals, and particularly vitamin C, calcium, and others reported to be beneficial for CVD. I also like and eat veggies that are beneficial, like cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatoes and sauce. My diet probably not the problem because its better than most people's. In fact, my daughter just obtained her nutritionist/dietician degree from college, and is a trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, so I'm aware of much of what has been said. My problem is not high cholesterol, but an imbalance between HDL/Total C ratio.Cardiologist says right out that doctors don't know whether low HDL contributes to CVD, or is a marker (result) of other metabolic processes. If I have to self diagnose, I would say I have Metabolic Syndrome, which again is difficult to diagnose or treat.

Well Im studying as a health speciatlist and dietian, are you currently eating a regiment that is working to lower your low HDL? It is one thing in a cluster of many that you can do to increase and better your health.

Sounds like you have it all figured out. Maybe the machine was off, or maybe all the things you mentioned zapped your level just a bit. If you are still concerned, wait a couple of weeks and ask the doctor to retest you. Also, there are about 4 or 5 differetn T-level measurements. the doctor has to look at all of them in balance. Serum testosterone can be low, but you might have very high level of free testosterone. Ask you doc about it, and get retested.

Let me put it this way: You got a mechanic working in a garage in a certain town. The mechanic's natural tendancy is to fix broken cars. People cars keep breaking down so they bring them in and he fixes them. Now they lower the age requirement for driver's licenses and get rid of the testing procedure. Now the number of accidents skyrockets. Soon more mechanics come to the same spot because of all the broken down cars. There's more than enough work to go around. Only problem is now you've got 80 mechanics in a single garage. And the law of the land(for purposes of our analogy) only permits one garage in the town. This is an impossible scenerio. Much like the one you described. My question to you is: why don't you stop worrying about the mechanics and bring back the testing procedure and raise the age requirement for licensure? The cholesterol is not the problem. It is there for a reason. To clog your arteries. Because you're probably acidotic, not eating enough vitamin C and your vessels have lost their flexibility. Dr. Matthias Rath recommends eating 600 to 3000mg a day for this problem. You've got scurvy me laddy. A disease we all thought went away. They just call it something else now: Coronary Artery Disease. According to Dr. R: 90% of heart disease begins in your coronary vasculature, the most important blood vessels in your body. Vitamin C helps your vessels to produce collagen, a substance which keeps them flexible. This is important because when your heart contracts, it squeezes your coronary arteries flat. So they obviously need flexibility. The cholesterol is just trying to keep you from dying by preventing a hemorrhagic myocardial infarction.

I am adding OKRA to my salad, and to all kind of food that I make; it is very good with meat and chicken if be mixed during cooking with a lot of Tomato!
