Why Does Defrag Fail?
I have read the similar question; I run defrag with an /f switch, and also without the switch ; I also run it from the command prompt. Its not the "Neat Freak" in me, since I know that a 0,0,0 defrag value set is possible ( the majority of the machines I do achieve that); its the one that fail that have me stumped. There is a set of commands like chkntfs or similar, and the command allows defrag to run fine. Also, some hardware settings can cause the failure, I just can't figure out how to find which is which.
Totally stumped... I have tried so many permutations.

most common cause for defrag failure is hard drive errors
incorrect entries in fat (file allocation table) & similar
run scan disk or check disk to ensure error free hard drive / correct the errors present
then run defrag & if problems persist, lemme know > i'll need what os u'r running & check accordingly

Often the process fails in regular Windows mode. Try running your defrag in Safe Mode, which doesn't load a bunch of processes that may run during a regular session. Most of the time that will do the trick. Good luck.

It could be as simple as one or more bad sectors on the target disk.
