Gonad above is very incorrect. Nobody broadcasts in 1080P currently as that far exceeds the maximum possible bandwidth thus allowed in today's technology. HD is broadcast in ither 1080i or 720p, both of which are great HD quality.

Satellite TV has a much lower bandwidth than cable TV and as such, satellite requires a lot of compression in order to get the signal into your TV set. Many satellite viewers often complain of 'compression artifacts' while they are nearly non-existant for cable-users. Compression artifacts are commonly viewed as blocky images or crap that's randomly appearing on your screen. Many times, compression also simply degrades the picture/signal in the process, meaning that HD picture coming from a cable most likely will look better than HD picture coming through the satellite.

It's true you get more channels on satellite, but what quality trumps quantity. Cable doesn't have 1,000 channels for you to surf through but it has more than enough HD channels for your viewing pleasure.

Depending on how many or how much of a satellite is used for your Pay TV provider, cable is generally better. Cable generally has a higher bit rate and less chance to cut out. Satellite uses a lower bit rate which compresses the signal to fit onto the satellite if there is only limited room. It can also cut in and out or lose it's signal altogether in bad weather.

I personally have Satellite only because I don't have cable wiring in my area in which I live and because i'm in Australia, I don't have to worry about real bad weather. The worst we get here is hail and that is hardly ever!

    Satellite

HD is HD. It depends on how many "true" HD channels each one has. It has to be broadcast in 1080p resolution, that is the best possible right now, but you also need to have a tv capable of handling 1080p as well or it will actually be a waste of HD.
