think about chicken pox's, once you have been infected it takes about 2 wks before you break out and get sick;therefore, people you hang out with may look healthy but they are hosting a virus/bacterial infection

yes you can always get sick from bacteria and viruses, and yes if its a bacterial or viral condition people can be contagious before showing symptoms.

Example: Strep Throat. A person can have the bacteria for weeks before showing symptoms, and even though it doesn't seem like they are sick they are still contagious because they harbor the bacteria (Streptococcus pyogenes). Close contact with that person could transfer the bacteria (by direct contact) to you. Strep Throat, for example, is transferd by sneezing, coughing, etc. basically the same way as the flu. Most bacterial and viral sicknesses are.

anyone get get sick from bacterial infections. Viral however don't seem to be contagious. Depending on the sick person's overall health, it is all possible that they are just a carrier and never themselves get sick.
