Is it possible to learn how to play electric guitar before acoustic guitar?

Yeah, it sure is, man. Electric guitars are actually EASIER to start learning that the acoustic. You generally don't have to press down so hard with your fingers with the electric. If you're aiming to want to play electric first, go right ahead, it's easy. I personally started playing the acoustic guitar first, then bought the electric. I only did this because I was told that to start on the electric first, then to start on acoustic after, it would be much harder on my fingers. Later I found this was true. Keep in mind, electric guitars are harder to move around.. Like you have to have the picks, amp(s), cord(s), then the guitar. As far as portability for the acoustic guitar, it's much easier. The only downside to starting on acoustic is the fact that you say you want to play electric. Your biggest enemy in learning guitar will be frustration and simply losing interest. You would be far less likely to lose interest if you are playing the type of guitar and music that most interests you. Make sense? You can get a beginners electric guitar and a $99 amp for the same price as a decent sounding acoustic. Look at the Peavey Vypyr 15 watt amp, Line 6 Spider IV 15 watt amp and Fender Mustang I 20 watt amp. They range from $99 to $109. Then just get whatever electric you can afford for now.

Same thing really. If anything, the electric generally has a smaller neck and that does two things, one is it makes fingering a little more difficult because the strings are closer together. But, it is a little easier to wrap your hand and fingers around the neck, and, the strings are lighter and not as far from the fret board.

Acoustic is said to be harder to learn on for those reasons, and without an amp, all your errors and misses are very noticeable.

If you can only afford one guitar, get the electric and learn to play clean, ie: no distortion or effects on your amp.

For the average person, I would recommend the acoustic guitar as a starting point -- plus, you won't need a guitar amp to practice with.

Anyway, once you get your fingers accustomed to fingering all type of chords as well as scales, then you might want to try it out on the electric guitar... but it's really up to you.

People who say you should learn acoustic guitar before electric are simply ignorant. Electric is easier to learn than acoustic because its easier to hold down the strings.

However, if you start out on electric, its hard to go to acoustic later, but if you start on acoustic, its easy to go to electric.

I recommend playing the type of guitar that your favorite artists play. Otherwise, it wont be too fun playing.
