Jesus is commanding us to be perfect as our father in heaven is perfect. Jesus would not command us to be something that we cannot be, therefore it is possible for us to become perfect and like God the Father. This is all possible through the perfecting blood atonement of Jesus Christ. We can repent and become perfected and in turn become as God the Father.

It means exactly what it says, we use the words Christian but no one really knows what it means. It means Christ Like. So if we are Christ like, then we are everything that he is. Well, one of the things that God is, is perfect. Without fault, blamesless, spotless, & it can be done, because when God enters, all sin must suffice. The only way that a man can't live here perfect is if he doesn't believe. If it wasn't true, then he wouldn't have told you to do it. That is a commandment. & if you wanna see heaven in peace, then I suggest you start walking like he say. It's a daily process, that helps us to over come the world, just as Jesus did. It can be done. The Bible is God, and if you live as it is written, then you are perfect. Don't let no one tell you other wise. Only the ones that know him, would know this! Ain't no one with sin in their bodies going back with Him. He's coming back for a church with out spoke or wrinkle, that's how I know we have to be PERFECT. He's coming back for those with the Holy Ghost, when it enters, then are we purged who, therefore; being made perfect. Without it we will not see the Lord in peace.

Put on Christ. It is something only God can do..Pray!

I'm glad you asked because I got to open my bible. I think the few things I know is about "perfect" is originally the earth was perfect.

sin entered the world through adam. Christ is known as the 2nd adam "perfectly doing gods will"

Jesus rose from the dead becase death could not hold him perfect He knows

In this text, Jesus is not commanding anything at all. The verb "be" in this verse is not in the imperative mood (the mood which expresses command). Instead, the verb "be" is in the indicative mood which is simply a statement of something that "is", or in this instance, will be (the tense of the verb "be" is future). Therefore, it is wrong to understand Matt 5:48 as a command from Jesus. Instead we need to understand it as a result of impartial love that blesses those who are deserving or not. It should be properly rendered "You, therefore, will be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect."

We can be perfect if our behavior is appropriate for our maturity level - perfect, yet with much room to grow. Our tendency to sin must never deter us from striving to be more like Christ. Christ calls all of his disciples to excel, to rise above mediocrity and to mature in every area, becoming like him. Those who strive to become perfect will one day be perfect even as Christ is perfect (2John 3:2-3).

Don't take it out of context. Read the verses preceeding it. Christ is talking about praying for those who treat you badly and loving your enemies. He says if you do this, you will be like the Father, because God loves even those who hate Him and speak badly of Him. This is an example of perfect love, and we are to be like God in this respect.

Jesus said: “You must accordingly be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”? (Matthew 5:48) Yes, but Jesus was not saying that one could be perfect in the absolute sense. After all, the Bible teaches that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) What, then, did Jesus mean? In the Bible the word “perfect” carries the idea of being complete. (Matthew 19:21) When Jesus said that we must be perfect, he was discussing love and encouraging his followers to be more complete in their love. How? By expanding their love to include even their enemies. The Bible writer Luke records Jesus as saying: “Continue becoming merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

After pointing out the deficiencies of the love expressed by humans toward one another, Of course, God is perfect in every respect. Jesus, however, was highlighting one particular aspect of Jehovah’s perfection, as he said earlier: “[God] makes his sun rise upon wicked people and good and makes it rain upon righteous people and unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:45) When it comes to showing kindness, God knows no partiality.

Jesus does not mean that people can be perfect in the absolute sense. Rather, they can, by imitating God.

(The Greek terms for perfection convey the idea of that which has been ‘brought to completion’

Jesus’ teachings emphasized purity of heart, singleness of outlook and intent, freedom from hypocrisy, all these being qualities that characterize integrity. The apostle Paul showed the same concern as had David and earlier servants of God for proving blameless and faultless. He was free from any charge of corruption or deviousness in his ministry and in all his dealings with others.
