How do I know if I can use my computer to burn DVD?

Basically, I have been using CD-R to burn audio and video files. However, I would like to switch to DVD-R / DVD+R since the storage space is higher. How can I know if my computer is compatible? Is there any program that I need to be able to burn files into the DVD-R? Also, does it matter if I use DVD-R or DVD+R?

Thanks.

There is no compatibility issue with DVD burners. It will work on any config. But it is recommended that you have atleast 512MB RAM to burn DVD.

http://pclinuxos.com/ will boot in CD or DVD and report all hardware.

On the desktop toolbar, click on the console, type DMESG and scroll up / down.

Or, in the main GUI menu look at the control panel for KDE or PCLos.

Yeah. Burns upto 50X faster than anything Microsoft, plus, virus free, hacker proof... and, runs on any system from 400Mhz up.

  • Yes, it does matter weather you use DVD-R or DVD+R. Many computer's only do ONE of the two. Also, if you have a Dell, go to the Dell website and look up your computer's ID on their website. They'll give you the specs!
