Why didn't Chris Gardner get a regular job?
While watching Pursuit of Happyness, I wondered why is it that a able bodied, young, SMART, likeable, able to sell himself man with military experience didn't just get a normal job during the 6 month internship. I thought it was crazy to have a child homeless when he could have been at McDonalds or sell those boxes on the side. Why?? I know he was black, and it is harder to get a job as a black person, but if he could get an internship at a prestigious firm, then surely he could get a job in the mean time somewhere else while being at his intership.
Yes, I did like it, it was one of the best movies I have seen in a while.

The movie is based on his life but not all of it was 100% accurate. I read that he actually earned $1,000 per month as an intern but he could only afford daycare, not housing too. That seems accurate too, because after taxes, there is no way that he could pay rent on top of day care. I am sure they stayed in motel rooms too. They were definitely living hand to mouth during that time.
I think that the reason why he didn't get another job on the side was because the internship was very demanding. He had to devote a lot of his physical and mental resources to that. He had to read and study so he could be the one selected at the end of the 6 months. The internship appeared to be an 8 to 5 type ordeal. Then he had to pick up his son from daycare and make it to the flop house by a certain time so they could get a room. Then he had homework to do. He was smart but he still had to learn on his own. You saw how he was reading by the streetlight coming through the window when they put the lights out in the shelter. In short, like most of us, he just did not have the time to work a second job. He was somewhat adept at selling those bone density scanners and that gave him the flexibility he needed to earn extra money without having to punch a time clock.

He did what he had to do to take care of his son. Being a parent isn't easy since kids don't come with a manual. I glad everything worked out for the best for him and his son it couldn't happen to a better person.
