If you want to keep up with your kids I'd suggest that

you just stick with them to learn it. Although things like

LOL are written form only ;) You're still allowed to laugh.

Most things are either just substitutes for emotions you can't

really express in written form or shortcuts for otherwise

painfully long but trivial stuff. You don't really need to know

more than a handful. It's easiest learned if you just do it

and if you stumble upon one you don't know just ask.

However. Some people (partly including me) are easily

annoyed by that stuff. People forget how to write proper

English. I'm not a native speaker/writer and I happen to

come across native speakers where I have to explain

them how it's written properly. That's pretty disturbing.

Shortcuts are fine where they are adequate. But using

u instead of you isn't too much of a typing relief and also

some of them can easily be mixed up for other things.

    B/C for example.

The link is quite extensive. But honestly. You don't really

need to know a fraction of that.
