although sad yet the death of President Ford unites this country in a way that reminds us, no matter what side on major issue we stand (Iraq, immigration, evironment) we stand together as one not just to mourn him but also to appreciate the office and the democracy of it all?.....

Saddam Hussein's death has gotten as much or more attention. Ford was 93 years old and got to be the leader of the most powerful nation in history, so it is hard to feel especially sad about the death. I don't think it has done much to bring the nation together, any more than Reagan's did. Also, he wasn't actually elected to the position, so it is hard to appreciate the democracy of it. Don't get me wrong, my impression of him has always been that he was a decent and well meaning guy, which is a great liability in politics. I just don't think his death changed much in the country, and it will be the execution of Saddam that is remembered years from now, not the death of Ford at 93.

Yes, and you have a very good point. There is perspective 25-30 years after the fact and so even people who voted for Carter in 76 are able to look back and appreciate Ford.
