Where did the Italian mafia originate in the U.S.A?

I wanted to know if the Italian mafias originated in Chicago or in New York? Which one was the most famous? Who was the head of the most famous mafia? Perhaps Capone, was there any other famous Mafia or leaders? Does someone know?

    the american mafia originated in new york, and it controlled the other mafia "branches" in other cities, except for Chicago, which was it's own entity, and didn't really answer to the NYC bosses.
