Are you too good to work in fast food?
Okay, so it's not the best job in the world, but it's a real job, that pays real money, and it is really hard at times (if you do your job right)(working with customers, bad bosses, lots of work need to be done as quickly as possible).
Why do people put it down? It is important to society. How many times a week do you depend on fast food workers? Working in fast food was a part of my past, I did it for 6 years, 5 years being a shift manager. It is a difficult job, and people with bad attitudes about fast food workers make up most of that difficulty.
You know, this is why this country needs Mexicans....because too many other people are too good to do certian jobs. There is no shame in working for a living. Why do so many people look down upon these people? (I'm still talking about fast food here, keep that in mind when answering)
Just to add a little and to comment on a couple of answers-- I worked there in high school and right out of high school. I have moved on....I am in college and will graduate in a couple of years with an elementary education degree.
I was not referring to Mexican-Americans....I was referring to actual Mexicans.

I choose not to but if it came down to working at Mc Donalds or not feeding my family I would definately get a job in fast food. That is where a lot of teens start out and some get promoted some get fired. I started in a mom and pop BBq at 15 it was a job that bought a car and paid my bills for me. It boils down to responsibility.

I have never worked in any food service capacity. However, keeping that in mind, I do appreciate the stress of working in fast food. People yell at you all the time because their burger wasn't put together in the same order they requested (or some other dumb reason).
I believe the reason that most people criticize people working in the fast food industry is because it tends to be a job teenagers get when they are in high school or starting college. Because of this, when you see a mature adult in this position you ask yourself why they are working here rather than at a better job.
Another factor is that fast food is viewed to be a "dead-end" job. Sure you can rise to be manager - but without opening your own franchise you are still left making only marginal money for a stressful and challenging job.
As a side note, I agree that immigration can be a boon to the nation, but it is also very frustrating trying to order at the drive through with somebody who doesn't speak clear english. Do I believe I am "better" than these people? NO! I have just moved past the point of fast food service. If I lost my job tomorrow and couldn't find a good job that used my skills I would certainly look at fast food before I got evicted! Any job is better than no job, and so much better for the economy than subsisting on welfare!

No. I am not too good to work in fast food. In fact, I did while attending college. Although, the pay is low, the jobs are easy to secure. On the flip side, it is an honest but slow way to earn money. There is absolutely nothing wrong with working fast food if your options are limited.
This country does not "need Mexicans" for the reason that you state. Mexican-Americans contribute in meaningful ways at all levels of the American society and economy (doctors, lawyers, judges, restaurant owners, engineers, architects, etc). Your statement is a biased. It is like saying that is why this country need uneducated people or whatever category people might classify you in.

I wouldn't work in fast food. Not because I am too good but because I have oily skin and I would break out too much. Plus, I love fast food and getting it for free would make me get way too fat.
It's a job and if I had no other option I would do it.
I just know that there are jobs that pay more for less aggravation.

Are you done airing out that anger suppressed by 6, 5 years, Carlos? Working fast food sucks, not that I'd know, but just the thought of having to smell Mcgrease for eight hours makes me gag. And I don't eat fast food. Sorry, just my opinion, I'm entitled to it as much as you. And by the way, if you think that is the only reason why you're here, to work undesirable jobs, you can do that in Mexico too.

I wouldn't say im too good....I know i couldn't handle working in fast food though. I like to think that i have a degree and I went to school to better myself. Fast Food is like all those blue collar jobs, nothing wrong with them, but i think im above them because i did the extra effort to get a real job.

It's not a matter of whether you're too 'good' for it.
People realize that fast food is hard work and low pay. It's something to do while you're learning how to do something else where you can make better money and not have to do such crappy work. Why would you want to stick with it, when you can make better money doing something else that you enjoy?
Carlos Mencia put it pretty well. If you're a teenager and it's your first job, you're learning important skills and developing work ethic. Good for you. If you're new to the country, you're using this to gain knowledge of the culture and work life in the country. But.... if you're American, over 30 and still working fast food... you're a dee dee dee.

One of the best shows on cable right now is "Dirty Jobs." The art of hard work escapes most people. I was amazed how much illegals make for the amount of work they do and how much they manage to save from that to send home to their families. Americans would NEVER be willing to work for those wages. Fast food is a transitional job or one that is good when you're still in school. The hours for a professional are awful, the employees are too young to deal with and the customers are......obnoxious. Someone has to do it but I'm glad it isn't me.

I started work in a Fish & Chip Shop as a waitress at 16, got promoted along the way, which enabled me to learn everything about the business and now I own a very successful Fish & Chip Shop in Spain Proof that it needn't be a dead end job working in fast food outlets
