As contageous as strep is, it's hard for an animal to catch something from a human.

You don't have anything to worry about. You're dog can't catch strep. Or any other type of human cold, flu, or allergies. They can have their own type of cold, flue or allergies, but a human can't get an animal sick, not like getting another human sick.

Well, strep throat and conjunctivitis is two illnesses that "seem" to be able to be contracted from dog to human and human to dog. At the practice I work at, we do strep cultures on dogs at the request of the patients pediatrician because the kids keep getting strep and the pediatrician thinks possibly the dog is the carrier even though the dog isn't sick. Sometime these cultures are positive for strep, even though the dog seems fine. These dogs are put on antibodic for 10 days to get rid of the strep.
