As a very small child, I adored "Susie Mariar" by Lois Lenski, and "The Golden Egg Book" by Margaret Wise Brown. As a young independent reader, I enjoyed "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown, "A Birthday for Frances" by Russell and Lillian Hoban, and "The Marvelous Mud Washing Machine" by Patty Wolcott. A little older, "The Secret Language" by Ursula Nordstrom, "Katie John" by Mary Calhoun, "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E. L. Konigsburg, "Harriet the Spy" by Louise Fitzhugh and "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin were my *absolute* favorites, and still books I read again and again.
