Can people in Louisiana have basements?
I have always been told that they cannot because of the ground (or something like that)?

Due to New Orleans', and Louisiana's high water table, its architecture is built on structural piers or piles driven into the ground - the same construction techniques utilized to build the ancient city of Venice. There are no basements and even the cemeteries are built above ground.

our ground is wet enough that you can walk a path one day and come back the next and there will be a hole where the ground sank. I've stepped in a few sinkholes that just appeared overnight. so no basements you'd either have an indoor pool or your house would just partially sink

If you can afford to power a Water Pump 24-7, sure.

The water table is too high. Even the cemeteries have to bury people above ground in masoleums.
