Where to get sandpaper?

Automotive sandpaper is good stuff, but you will not find anything above 600 grit at Homey-D (I work there)... besides there is something even better.

For those that have heard of it, Micro-Mesh is most often recognized as that stuff that has the remarkable ability to restore aircraft windows to optical clarity -- but it can also be applied to just about any project that needs a truly superior finished surface.

Available in sheets, rolls, discs and kits, it comes in several different compositions containing silicone or aluminum oxide crystals bonded into a specially formulated latex matrix on a flexible cloth backing to produce an extremely consistent scratch pattern.

You did not describe your project, Kokopelli, but it would probably be covered -- softwood, hardwood, plastics, fiberglass, solid surfaces (like Corian), acrylics (like Plexiglass), polycarbonates (like Lexan), cultured marble and just about any metal you would want -- there is even one formulation featuring micron-graded diamond crystals, intended for use with hardened metal alloys and ceramics.

The most popular format for the majority of users is the Micro-Mesh Regular, featuring silicone carbide crystals in grades 1500 through 12000 (30 to 2 microns - about 1/40th the width of a human hair). Working progressively up through the 12,000 grit will yield a finished surface that is scary-smooth.

A word of caution: Micro-Mesh abrasives are very durable, but resist the temptation to use them for general stock removal. They will wear out too quickly. Micro-Mesh is made for polishing only, but nobody does it better.

BTW -- a friend of mine who restores wrecked cars says the first time he used MicroMesh he had an Auto-Body Experience...

I'm looking for standard sheets of wet/dry sandpaper in the 4000, 6,000, 8,000 and 12,000 grit range. What's a good source for this type of thing? This seems to be way beyond the range of most suppliers. Right now I've only got up to 2,000 grit and it's just not fine enough.

This is automotive finishing-grade sandpaper. You may want to try a good auto parts store that sells automotive paint (not cheapo spray paint). If that doesn't work, you may want to try going to a collision repair shop and buying some off of them. Since you're not a competitor, they'll probably help you out. Good luck.

Personally, I order mine from a place called "Industrial Abrasives."

try a machine shop, or their suppliers, i don't know their names in your area. what you want is not really sandpaper, so you are asking for the wrong thing, you want Emery cloth.

go to Rockler, They have 1500, 1800, 2400, 3200, 3500, 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000 grit abrasives.

Go to a power tool supply, someone who sells and service - if they don't stock i,t they can get it
