Herring in cream sauce and potatoes?

This is a dish has been handed down from my mother's family, who came from the northern Germany area know as Pomerania.

In a bowl you combine equal amounts of herring in sour cream sauce and and cream. Set it aside while you boil a large pot of potatoes, preferrably reds. When the potatoes are done, they are drained. Peeling them is optional. A serving is a plateful of potatoes, coarsely mashed, topped with the herring and cream.

We really enjoy this, but have yet to find anyone else who has even heard of serving this dish for a meal. Have you?

Update:

Dad's side of the family is Finnish, from around Alavus. They were more partial to smoked or salted fish.

My parents live in Germany and when I go to visit I always get the herring in sour cream or sometimes in a dijonaise-like sauce. It is great!! But I wouldn't eat it necessarily as a meal but maybe as a side.

Herring in sour cream, herring in wine sauce (have some in the fridge now- Vita), herring dip~ always a staple at our family holidays, sounds the same w/o spuds.

    Your recipe sounds yummy!!

I'll try it. Our Gram was Finnish and nobody any of us know dig the herring thing, our friends think it's gross!! All of us cousins keep pickled in the the fridge at all times- mmmm!!!
