Check out a music publisher's association; perhaps talk with a couple of their members about where to go or who to contact.

Don't expect to change the way the music business operates, especially since until you've gained some noteriety they don't "need" you. The music business is harsh!
If you haven't yet, I would suggest looking for a nearby community college or four-year university with classes on the music industry or music industry law (you might find this listed under a mass comm or media arts). You will need to become well versed in the ways of copyright law (not just in how to use it to your advantage, but how to also keep artists that use your stuff safe).
Good luck!

well, ima small town girl, but i think that the best thing to be was go to a small function, such as a simple venue that plays just-signed artists and see wat they think of your music.
and go from there.
thats wat i would do.
