What's this lump in my armpit??
About 5 days ago I started to feel a lump in my armpit. It is about the size of a quarter now. Yesterday it started to hurt, and today it hurts like hell and is all red. I'm thinking it's an infection of some kind. I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. But right now I'm looking for ideas ***from people with medical experience***. Anybody know what it could be? Thank you.

OK, I'll need to see your insurance card... But seriously, you probably have an abcess, which is a subcutaneous infection at a deeper level than a boil. It hurts because the pus is building up pressure. I first suggest going to your doctor, who will at the very least write up a script for a strong antibiotic and some painkiller. Levaquin and Percocet are good choices. You want to avoid having it lanced if possible because it would be a minor surgical procedure. Rather, you can help it mature to the point where it reaches the surface and can drain on it's own accord. Use a hot wet towel for at least 15 minutes at a time to help it along. Eventually it will begin to seep. Once the pressure is relieved it quickly feels better! Then you can gently squeeze the pus out over the next few days. Keep your pustule clean, treat it with Betadine, and cover it with sterile dressing. Change the dressing every 6 hours or so. It will be fine in a few days. If it reverses the healing process and starts getting worse, set up another doctor's appt.

Are you a woman? Reason being is that I had a lump that size in my armpit and it turned out it came from putting deoderant on right after I shaved my pits. It was causing an irritation and infection from the deoderant going into the open pores. Also, it got to the point where I could squeeze fluid out of it, and actually bring it down in size. It hurt to squeeze it but it actually hurt less and was less red after I did it. It's probably hurting and red because it's filling up with so much fluid. But if it doesn't squeeze then it might be a thyroid which the dr can only help.

My guess would be a boil. I used to get them all the time under my arm. They are not a big deal, just a pain. If you take a warm washcloth and a heat pad, and place it under your arm, it could help ease the pain. Also, if it is a boil, it will bring it to a head and allow the doctor to lance it so you don't have to bother with it anymore, or come back when it is at a head. Also, if it is a boil, start washing extra under your arms and it won't happen again. It is what I did, and I don't get them anymore.

I'm no doctor, but: #1: If you shave your armpits it could be an ingrown hair. That's pretty big for an ingrown hair tho.
#2: Possible a clogged sweat gland. Sometimes deoderant/antiperspirant will clog sweat glands and cause this.
I'd still go to the doctor tho to be sure it isn't something really bad.

a couple of years ago i started to get a lump under my arm, and went to the dr about it. it didn't dawn on me until the dr asked if i had change deordants which i did. it turned out that the new deordant was not allowing my sweat glands to sweat. he gave me a pill and i changed back my deordant, and it cleared up! did you change anything lately?

People with medical experience? Boy are you new.... It's just a boil. The doc will lance it, it will drain a bunch of pus, and that will be the end of it.
