Looking for the best cell phone and family plan for soldier going overseas?

My son and I have Cingular and are due for an upgrade next week. Apparently there is also a rate increase due, at which time we can drop the plan without penalties.

He'll be going overseas soon and I want to know what phone, company and plan would best serve us.... or where to get such information.

Do we:

a) upgrade?

b) switch to another service while we can? (which one?)

c) just use calling cards while he's overseas?

If you have military experience, I'd like to know what you found.

Well the best advise i would give u..is to check what country ur son is going to...and then...call the cell phone companies...and see what their rates are....chances are cingular will have a good rate for international roaming...since they are GSM.....but also try t-mobile as well...etc..... AND...i dont know if u heard about this or not...but another thing u can take a look into is VONAGE.....they are a telephone company that uses the internet to make phone calls....i bet the military gives high speed internet access to soldiers.....it would help to know where ur son is going....but anyways....with vonage....u can choose any area code that u want for ur phone.....say for example...if u live in a 209 area code...and u get vonage with that area.....ur sone can take the router they supply with the service to the country he is going to..and plug it into the broadband service.....now since he is on the broadband network...if u call the 209 area code number ur got with vonage..it will ring overseas where ur son is...and he can pick up.........for u..it will be a local call..and he can also call u from that phone from there..but the only thing is that he will need a high speed internet access......vonage also has a usb type device...that u can plug into ur laptop with wireless access and talk thru there....just an option that might be a lot cheaper for u guys....it will cost $25/month ...check into it......hope it helped...

In my opinion is better for you two to get a nextel, the coverage area in almost worldwide and if you both have the same nextel you both get to talk by the walkie-talkie with the same plan rate and wont get charge for long distant.
