Do you remember the 80s? What was your favorite MTV music video?

I was just listening to the radio and heard a song that threw me straight back to the early 80s and my highschool days. I remember when MTV was brand new! (1981 for those who don't know.) I always loved that little astronaut that planted the MTV flag on the moon! lol So I got to thinking about all my favorite music videos. I had two in particular: Aha's "Take on Me," and Michael "Before I Went Wacko" Jackson's "Thriller."

"Take on Me" was the coolest! Totally cutting edge for the time. Isn't that funny? And "Thriller..." Well, c'mon..be honest. Who of you DIDN'T get up in the middle of your living room floor and dance with all the zombies? lol

So...what about YOU? tell me some of your favorite MTV music video moments from the 80's!

Update:

Bonus points for you if you're the first to give me the names of all four of the original Veejays!

Update 2:

Oooops, my bad! RedStaple, you're right.. there were 5 original veejays. And you nailed the names!

Update 3:

LOL! This is so much fun!! You guys are bringing back all KINDS of memories for me! Cyndi Lauper, Adam Ant, Peter Gabriel, David Lee Roth, and all the rest! Keep 'em coming!

    There were 5 Original DJ's, not 4:

    Martha Quinn

    Mark Goodman

    Nin Blackwood

    JJ Jackson

    Alan Hunter

    Martha was HOT!!!!!

Der Kommissar, The Metro, New Years Day.

    Every video from 1983 rocked.

Far and away, the best video has to be Take On Me by A-Ha. Others were good, but this one blew them all away (and, even in the age of total digital animation, still rules the pack). But there were other good videos from cinematography and/or artistic perspectives, like "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson with the light-up street tiles, or any of Peter Gabriel's material, like "Sledgehammer" with the stop-motion animation. Some weren't SEEN as good (like Rio by Duran Duran or anything by Adam Ant), but were still good music... so the video didn't matter (who could actually look at the TV while dancing around the house :) ). And then there were the more "interesting" videos, at least from the perspective of an adolescent teen boy, like "She's a Beauty" by the Tubes, "I Want Your Sex" by George Michael, and almost everything that Madonna put out. BTW, did you hear that MTV productions is looking to start a third music video channel? One that actually plays videos and doesn't have ANY game shows, reality TV or anything OTHER than music videos? It'll be like jumping back in time by 20 years! :)

"Don't Come Around Here No More"--Tom Petty (freaked me out, but I always loved the Alice in Wonderland imagery

    and

"One Lonely Night"--REO Speedwagon. Loved the song, and then saw the video once or twice; just totally not what I was expecting, but delightfullly quirky.

"Take On Me" and "Thriller" were both great, too, you're right. It's back when people still played with the idea of video representation of their music--and didn't just use the video as a means to tell the world how sexy they are (although, to be fair, there was plenty of that happening too...good lord, how many videos of rock concert footage did you have to go through to get to a creative one??).

Thanks for the question! That's a good one!

Yeah, I remember, Alzheimer's hasnt kicked in yet....I loved it when MTV played a video by Dokken, they never got the airplay they deserved...I loved all of Madonna's videos back then too! OMG I just put it on VH1 Classics and "In and Out of Love" from Bon Jovi's 7800 Fahrenheit's album is on!! OHHHH YEAH!!

Martha Quinn was my fave original veejay!! Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson and Alan Hunter!!

Girls just wanna have fun! I loved seeing Cyndi dance around with pink hair and high heeled boots. Her lips looked square when she sang, "Some boys take a beautiful girl and hide her away from the rest of the world..". And all the people dancing in her bedroom at the end. She was SOOOO Cool then!

Lets hear it for the boy - was also cute and...

Like a virgin - gondola love and the panting tiger

I have to agree with Take On Me. But loved Adam Ant "Goody Two Shoes"! And the original VJ's were JJ Jackson, Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood and Alan ???? Then Mark came in.

  • Hey! Cool question.... MTV was MY WAY on the 80's....

Have you seen all those cool videos from David Lee Roth??? California Girls... Goin' Crazy... Yankee Rose... They were hilarious....

"It's the Fabulous Picasso Brothers!!!" - That's right! The party's back! So hide your valuables..."

As far as cool scenery goes, another great video was Van Halen's "Dreams", with the Blue Angels!

In the mood for music videos? Search them on YouTube, they're all there.

All right, gotta love them eighties...

  • Thriller was the best video EVER!! Take On Me was good too!!
