Do all cars have to be registered?

My sons are having a discussion. They want opinions on the following: If a car was made before car registration laws were passed. Does the car have to be registered? Or are they grandfathered in?

Cars do not have to be registered (get license plates) if they are only driven on private property, never on public roads. For example, a pure race car does not have to be registered or a vehicle only driven on a farm (like a tractor) also is not required to get plates.

Since registration occurs at the state level on regular intervals (such as annually) there is no grandfathering, even on the first car ever made.

If the car is going to be driven on public roads, it has to be licensed, registered and insured according to the laws of your state of residence.

The manufactured date of the car itself has nothing to do with it.

Doesn't matter if the car was manufactured in 1908, 1988 or 2008...if you're going to drive it on public roads it has to be licensed, registered and insured.
