The pressure from rubbing causes deformation of the eyeball and a resultant increase in internal pressure, which stimulates firing of some of the nerves in the retina, which is interpreted by the visual cortex of the brain as a number of stars.

  • Yup, this happens to me too. Well, the only thing in this is call your Eye specialist for more details. If you see them too often and for long time. Seriously, it may happen that somtime long back someone did hit you on your eye by mistake or when you were small you did put pencil in your eye.Was Seriously Joking. Sorry!! What happens is that those pulse go through your eye, many a times even when you look at a bright sky, you will exactly see from where those pulse come.U will see a thin line nearly transparent as if you are looking at a glass scratch. And when you go to have a look at it , it happens that it starts going or instead running away.It goes downdown or up up or goes side ways. These are something which i m telling you which are like stars and about stars those are chemical reactions in your eyes taking place. When you blink your eyes for 10-20 times they go.

The retina of the human eye transmits its information to the brain via the optic nerve. Any stimulation of the retina - be it from light entering your eye or by pressure on the eyeball (rubbing your eyes) will cause a signal to transmit from the retina to the brain. The brain only interprets signals from the retina as light therefore when you rub your eyes and cause signals to be sent to the brain, the brain sees them as points of light (stars).

A rapid change in eye pressure and blood flow to the cones and rods in your eye causes chemical signals to go to the optic nerve.they usually go away soon but keep your fingers out of your eyes anyway.

Look up "phosphenes" and "floaters". These are normal phenomena of the human eye.
