how do i create mp3 files of songs i have already downloaded to my computer (via putting a CD in my drive)?

there is this website called "folk alley" and i want to put my songs on their "open mic" feature, but when i try to upload them from my computer the folk alley thingy replies "your songs must be in mp3 format".

i thought that they WERE in mp3 format once they were downloaded to my computer off the CD i put in my drive and saved to my computer ...

to check which format your cd was downloaded to

open the folder the songs are in

click once on one of the songs it should show the title, size and format along the left side of the window (might have to scroll down to view it)

or right click on the song and click Properties - it will show the music format of that file in the general tab (if there's more than one tab) - click ok to close that window

it will show if it's a - .wav format, .wma format, .ra format, .mp4 format - sometimes it will show as an .mp3 format - I have had that happen before - which I convert to .mp3 format again - this usually fixes the problem

you can use any sound editor program to do this

one good program for doing this is goldwave - make sure you also download the LameWin32 file (this is an .mp3 encoder and is necessary to add to the goldwave program and the instructions are in the site as well) which is also available for download at the goldwave listed below:

The format of the files depends upon what setting the application you used to rip the CDs was set for. All applications that can rip are able to do so in different formats with the most common being MP3.

Find the ripped files on your hard drive and right-click one of the files and select Properties and it should tell you what format the file is currently in.

Download Media Monkey. It's a free media player/ converter. Far superior to Windows Media Player

I would download the latest version of Apple's iTunes. It's very user-friendly and does everything you need and more. Once you import your cd into iTunes, you right-click on the title and click "convert to mp3" and viola!
