2000 BMW 528i "Service Engine Soon"?

I have recently gotten a BMW (2000, 528i) and its "Service Engine Soon" light came on. I took it local Auto Zone and the message number was 1285. Does anybody know what it is and should I take it to a local BMW dealer?

But now it disappeared. Is this a common problem. Should I worry about it. Will appreciate your input.

Thanks.

if the light is gone, then don't worry about it. it could something as simple as a little extra water in the gas cause 1 misfire. if it comes back on take it to a dealer. if not, then happy motoring.

Service Engine Soon could simply mean that you need to change the oil. Mercedes has a system that constantly analyzes engine oil and lets you know when it is time to change it. I wouldn't be surprised if BMW did, too.

You need to find a good, independent BMW or European mechanic. Most every city of any size has one, and many are factory trained. The dealer can help you, but an independent would be considerably cheaper, and usually easier to work with. Check your phone book, ask other BMW owners, or ask at a high end used car lot. Someone will know of a good mechanic.

The BMW Fault Code P1285 translates to: "Switching solenoid for air assisted injection valves bank 1, control signal circuit is high." Depending on when your car was last serviced, and which service you received, (Inspection I, or Inspection II), you will very likely see the "Service Engine Soon" light come on again.

It is very possible that your Extended Warranty (if you purchased one) would cover this kind of problem. It will depend on how many miles you have driven and/or if you have exceeded the time barriers listed in your warranty. I would hope your local BMW Dealer has seen this problem before and will change out the bank 1 air injection control valve for you.

    P1285

Switching Solenoid for Air Assisted Injection Valves Bank 1 Control Circuit Signal High

A number of embodiments of multi-valve internal combustion engines having a manifold fuel injection and a control valve which changes the air flow pattern into the combustion chamber between an unrestricted flow and a restricted flow wherein turbulence is generated. An air assist arrangement including a number of different embodiments of insert pieces are employed for changing the spray pattern in response to the position of the control valve so as to provide the desired fuel flow into the combustion chamber when the control valve is controlling the air flow.

    er..rofl...

no.. every 6 months the car dealership suggests that you bring your car mechanic and have him check it out to make sure everything is ok and safe... and to help you remember they put an alarm countdown in your car to let you know when its time to have it checked... when you brought it to autozone they must have either checked it.. or restarted the timer for you... thats why its off.. in 6 months itll turn on again and you should have it checked quickly once you have a day off...
