you have been watching the discovery science channel again, you should be outside enjoying the fresh air.

however the fastest ship that can be built at the moment is a solar sail craft that can attain 1/10 the speed of light, the closest neighbouring star is approx 4 light years away, so it will take 40 years to get there. that's all depends if it's even worth going there. in the search of a habital planet i say we will have to travel a lot farther. as far as hibernation we are still a long way off from sorted that one out and even if we do manage to sort it would anyone totally rely on computers to stay functional for a 100 or a 1000 years to wake us up? i think at most 5 years travel would be maximun before we start cracking up but thats not going to happen anytime soon.

the second part of you question: you are referring to a generation ship, it would need to be very large ship with 3000 souls or so would be needed, on a one way trip to successfully restock the crew and eventually come forth and multiply on there new brave world. i seen artist impression of a large converted asteroid which been hollow out inside to house the colonists and a couple of engines strap to one end of it. this world would want to be in a very bad state before i consider flying in a rock in search of another planet.

yet there is a third possible way to travel to the stars, without sounding to rude some scientists are suggesting in senting a sperm bank into space with female eggs and articfial wombs and when this potential baby factory finds a suitable planet... well you can guess the rest. all i can say god help e.t. when he/she or it gets a whiff of the first babys nappies, we could end up with an interstellar war.

putting all the joking aside the men and women that would travel to the stars will symbolise humankind thirst for exploration and acting out there dreams like the pioneers before them that settle in the americas

    1. Depends on the life sustaining devices and possibilities while in space. 2. Depends on the answer to #1.

Difficult but interesting answer. I personally would like to reach the destination myself, but space is kinda creepy!

A similar question is how is time on other planets measured? The answer to time in space would be, time on earth is measured by the speed the earth spins at, which is 24 hours, I've forgotten the distance, time in space would be measured differnetly.
