CD Player- I want to record my son songs to play, but what form do they need to be in?

I know there are free songs out there to download, but what format do they need to be in so that they will work on a portable CD player?

Thanks.

Update:

Thanks alfcahill, but I'm talking about the type that a protable CD player can read. Most on the net are MP3 and that doesn't work on my son's aparently. I've tried it, no luck. Not sure what else it would play.

any form they come in will work if not then your media player, be it windows or itune or winamp should be able to convert them.

PS your computer has to have a cd or dvd burner

    luck
