So recently we had this thing installed to back up all our information on the computer. How do I fix the sound

There's this box thing that backs up all the data onto it and after the computer person installed it, the sound stopped working. My parents say that the sound card is fine, and there's just a program that screws up the audio. What is the problem?

It seems unlikely that installing a backup device would mess with the sound.

I would go Start > Control Panel > Sounds / or / Multimedia and look through there to ensure that the volumes are up and nothing is muted. It's dorky, but also be sure your speakers are properly plugged in.

It's much more likely that there is some setting somewhere that has been changed than the backup did anything.
