The LT motors used in Caprices, Impalas, & Roadmasters were an iron head, low compression, engine. If you did not reflash your PCM, it is likely very confused, as the fuel and spark maps, fan temps, well basically everything for the low compression version should be different than for the aluminum head version that came in the Camaro. Keep in mind they also built a 4.3L (L99) version for the Caprice. They are visually identical, but if you happen to have one of those, everything would be that much further off.

Similar situation with a grand prix 1994 vintage, turned out to be the coil pack mounting plate which had some circuitry needed to be replaced don't know if the systems are the same but the result was the same intermittent operation, or only ran when cold.

Without some more info it is only a guess but make sure you are using the correct water pump and drive belt configuration. There is a good chance you may be driving the water pump backwards.

The problem could be air in the heads. When the engine was replaced the coolant level was topped off and never added more coolant when the thermostat opened when the engine reached operating temp. So, the heads are overheating causing your problem. Also, timing could be way to advanced.

in changing the motor out did you mack sure to put the air dam under the front of the car back. there is a peace of plastic that hangs down in the front of the car if it is not there the car will overheat going down the road but sitting it will not check it

Could be caused by closed EGR Valve.Check vacuum line to EGR for proper function.Check to see if the wind dam is on .It will heat up if it is not on.Make sure knock sensor is plugged in.
