here in the south it is warm in the beginning of may usually...
but saying that it's very warm at the minute 20 degrees so it may be very hot.....?
if you come to southern italy in the spring it not all that crowded and alot easier to see all the sights like pompeii, paestum, napoli and the amalfi coast..paestum is particularly pretty in the spring with lots of wild flowers
as for central northern italy can't help i'm afraid
2 good 2 miss is in for a shock as we are forcast snow for nearly all of italy this week

I was there in April and May 2008. Some days it was fairly warm (60s F, 70s F) but on other days it dropped into the 50s during the day and 40s at night. Bring warm weather clothing that you can layer, shoes (not just sandals), a sweater or two and a light-to medium warmth jacket. I had an unlined leather jacket and cardigan and that worked fine. Pants and a skirt or two are your best bet.

As others have said it is hard to know with certainty. I would prolly include at least a little rain gear.
Last two weeks of April weather averages from weather underground:

depends on where you want to go. The south is always much warmer, but generally speaking the climate in Italy is always warmer than Britain, unless you go to the far north where you get an alpine climate.
