How can I paint my room with a black and white color sceem without making it look super dark?
It's a very small room I only can fit a bed and tv in it but I hate having plan white walls, and I'd love a black and white color combo.
I DON'T plan on painting the walls black

Time to get creative.....
If you are more on a budget or just don't want to make a mess.. just add black and white photos with a solid black picture frame in various sizes and perhaps a mirror to be the center of the wall and photo collages around.
one wall you can even hang a black & white patteren curtain or sheet made into a curtain as the back wall / head of the bed
For the floor use a total off color for and area rug like red, yellow blue or hot pink.

My idea is instead of making a pitch black color scheme look at your paint choices and see if perhaps a lighter smoke color or charcoal. Paint 3 of the walls an off/white and having one smoky black accent wall so that the contrasts aren't so obvious. Or maybe even just a black border a foot wide about 3-4 feet from the ceiling. I'm from NYC so I know all about very small living spaces, the trick that worked for me is not being afraid to be creative and using what little resources you have to your advantage

If you have to have black on the walls your best bet would be to keep them white where the most light shows on them, that way the darker area will have the appearance of looking a little lighter.
But I really have to tell you that black is a huge mistake. I love black and would not paint my walls black at all. If anything I would use neutral colors, even a beige would bring in better light.
Good luck

Painting the room around you a bright white will seemingly almost double the size of the room. You might try finding a black and white checkered carpet for the flooring and then around the room you could scatter lipstick red objects (like a bouquet of red roses in a clear vase and/or bright red knick-knacks on the lamp tables). A small amount of these red items will keep the room from looking too boring but don't go overboard or it will give it a "60's" look that would seem untimely.

Keep the walls white as the background. Then use a big natural sponge, instead of a paint brush to dab on the black paint. The black highlights will give it a nice rustic look.

Use more white and less black. Are shades of black out of the question? Decide which color will be the dominant color then accent with the other. I think black walls will be a mistake unless it's only one wall.

paint it white with plack stripes. You could make the black stripes big and different sizes. l ll l l ll ll l
Or you could paint the bottom half black and the top half white and put some molding on the wall between the two.

You could wallpaper 1 wall with black and white stripes. You could frame a lot of black and white photos with a black frame and hang them. You could buy some black lampshades and black curtains and black/white throw pillows. Sounds cool.
