Tattoo and Tip?

Hi all...ok - tattoo cost is 700...was orig going to tip 88 (8 is a good luck # in chinese and artist is chinese so he'll know what that means) BUT here's the thing. I'm thinking of upping the tip amount...100 to the artist and 50 to the person that's been helping me appt wise, design wise and she's just really been avail if I've had any questions...ranging from scheduling of the tattoo to the fact that I'm still nursing and getting a tattoo. (which i dbl checked with my daughter's pedi, my doctor, the lactation center and the tattoo studio and it's ok to do)

Was going to give it in a Chinese Red Envelope (I'm married - so me giving red envelopes is ok)

I am not sure if the studio shares tips as a whole or if you take what you get from the customers....but 150 is 21.4% tip

Sound like a good plan?

I really like this tattoo studio....they've been VERY helpful and I'm so glad I went to them.

Update:

and yes i'm also chinese - so no comments about not giving a red envelope if i'm not chinese.

red envelope = lucky money

Update 2:

Re: hours spent on my tattoo preparation...my artist is DaWei Zhang...he was an art professor in China before he came to US...he's been sketching it out at home and is going to tweak it more after today's conversation. In terms of the woman who's been helping me (she's also a tattoo artist there but doesn't specialize in realism). I think she also acts as like the office manager too. She's not going to be inking me but she's talked to me on several occasions to help plan the tattoo and answered questions re: nursing and tattoos, design capabilities, etc.

I just do not want to leave a "cheapie" tip and I want to genuinely let them know that I've appreciated everything.

    that sounds good to me!

i think that the artist will appreciate the red envelope gesture, as it shows the thought behind it, and it also shows your appreciation for having him tattoo you!

$700? i bet you're going to get a true work of art!!

There is no percentage to go by. Your artist will be happy with whatever you give him that is above and beyond what you had to pay for the art. It is rare that a tip is given to a receptionist/schedule person. Just give the artist whatever you think would be a good tip. And 88 bucks is a good tip. 20 is the most common. The tattoos are expensive because tattoo artists make a lot of money on the work. Believe me, they are getting paid.

I would put the lucky 88 dollars in the envelope and then give them a little more on the side at some point. Most tips average 15-20%, so you're just out of the 'average'. Tip them separate (since most places don't share their tips) and good luck, I hope you love your tattoo. I think that's an awesome and sincere idea that you are doing something from your heritage.

I think $100 to the artist and $50 to the girl is great and the red envelope is very symbolic and a nice gesture.

That is a good tip, I'm glad you decided to give more than $88. However, in all the tattoo parlors I've been to, they don't share tips. So, I'd give them separately.

I think separate tips is a good idea. but, more than how much the tattoo cost, i am curious how many hours were spent on the tattoo and how much time the assistant spent on you.
