The only word you need to know is "we" - Al Gore is incapable of grasping that there is no "we" in a political sense- - there are individuals. The only "we" is the free market, the sum of all individuals' FREE decisions. "We" in the political sense means using government force - it means some people make decisions and the rest are forced to go along. "We" don't "have a welfare system" - - the government forces some of us to pay other people's bills. The question isn't whether "we" should conserve but whether some people have a right to dictate to other people how much they are allowed to consume, which, if they're spending their own money, ought not to be limited by others unless such consumption is proven to cause some alleged harm, in this case global warming, and no such proof exists.

I commute 25 miles to work. I love my job and I really love where I live. It's none of your business where I live and where I work. I pay for my fuel and I paid for my car - I'm not selfish for choosing how to spend my own money differently than the way you choose to spend yours. Meeting Kyoto with a growing population ultimately means either forcing me to live closer to work or taxing me to the point where I can't afford not to. That is wrong. It is tyranny. It goes against every principle on which this country was formed.
