Dodge Ramcharger Gagging on Air!?!?
I have a 1982 2wd 5.2 liter 318 Ramcharger with a 2 barrel carburetor that has an electronic dealy on it.
It seems to run just fine, or so it seems... The problem is, that once every month, or blue moon, the thing just wants to kill on me, and sounds like it's just swallowing air. When it does do this, I can just about get it to idle, but that is about all. If I give it gas, it just chokes a bit, or swallows a bunch of air, and dies. It will do this until I give up, and when the next day comes along and I have the time to take a look at it, it just starts up and runs fine, and will do so until it decides to do this again.
It doesn't seem like weather has anything to do with this, because it has done this in several types.
I have replaced the fuel filter, and checked the fuel pump in the process. I did notice that the electronic dealy was unplugged when I had bought it, so I reconnected that, but it still does it.
Can somebody help me?

It sounds like vapor lock too me, vapor lock comes from the fuel percolating and vapor causing a mech pump to not feed fuel any more fuel to the carb. I would suggest replacing your mechanical fuel pump and then possibly "shrouding" the lines that run near the engine block with some rubber fuel line, this may help keep the fuel in the lines cooler and its possible your fuel pump is failing.

I had a '86 Chrysler Fifth Ave with the same lean burn setup. First, check the electrical connections on the lean burn unit. The computer is in the aircleaner housing on the lean-burn system. If the electrical connector is dirty or loose, the engine dies. If its not the lean burn, then rebuild carb and check fuel filter and vacuum lines.

So I take it that it doesn't have a smog pump now, and your asking how to tell whether it had one from the factory that was removed, correct? If that is the case just look to see if there is an extra drive pulley with no belt on it, that would indicate that the vehicle came with an accessory that has been removed at some time.

Sounds to me like your carburetor float is sticking a bit. I had a ford v-6 that did this. It would idle but didn't stay running when you tried to drive it. When it does that, give the carb a whack on it's side with a wrench to unstick it. Worked for me

If it has lean burn (box attached to air cleaner), I would suspect that thing. I had a few ramchargers that were very reliable, but fortunately did not have leanburn.
