Many historians believe the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg is the most important invention in the last 1000 years because this was a huge step in the industrialization of our society. The invention of the printing press allowed many more people to become educated because books were no longer being slowly hand written and expensively sold. The printing press also allowed newspapers to become part of everyday life. More people became informed and more people were able to contribute to create a richer society.

And this is related to geography how? :)
The printing press is important for exactly the same reason the internet is important. Namely: it enables the flow of all kinds of information to groups of folks who might not have access to it otherwise.
With the printing press, the written word became widely available to the middle class. The press empowers people -- affording them the information they need to make up their own minds about politics, religion, music, literature, or just about anything else that's important.
The printing press was necessary before broad public education programs could be implemented -- and before democracy itself could happen. So yeah, it was important when it was invented. And it's still important today.

The printing press allowed for freely distributed books and publications. Prior to this, only the super rich or churches had routine access to the printed page.
This device also allowed ideas to spread far beyond the borders of where the writer was. It was a portable, easily smuggled way to spread a message even into repressive societies.

I agree because it made it possible for people to spread their word, spread ideas and enhance intellectual growth in a way only possible through spoken word before. suddenly they could mass produce an idea and spread it around in no time at all. It made "current events" possible and helped inform people during times of war and elections.
