which is better? h&r block or jackson hewitt?

I recently switched to H & R Block as a preparer after working for years in the business. In order to work for them I had to take 3 months of classes on preparing individuals returns by HAND and had to pass the course with a minimum of an 80%. And I also took a month long course on their computer system. When I was taking the tax class I was told that many people from Jackson Hewitt had attended these classes in the past, some couldn't pass the class. Yet they would be allowed to go back to work doing taxes with their employer. Now do you want the preparers that attended the classes or the people who taught them. Personally I am very impressed so far this season. And if you discuss your return with the person that greets you they will find the preparer that is right for you. Good luck!

Jackson Hewitt tend to concentrate on the "Low Income, I need my money now!!!" crowd. Anything more complex than a 1040 with EIC can be beyond the average JH employee.

While Block does go after the low income crowd also, some people there have many many years of experience and know more than most CPAs.

Wherever you go, pre-screen them to make sure that they can handle the return. If you are not comfortable with the preparer, ask for a new one or take your stuff and walk out.
