What's the best way to start a fire, with only readily available natural materials from the outdoors?
A while back we had a garden party in high summer. Temperature was around 85 and everything was tinder dry. The sun was blazing down. I threw out a challenge that I'd give a bottle of champagne to anyone who could make fire, without resorting to lenses, lighters, or any other modern aid. There were PHD's, BSc's and all sorts there, and no-one could start a fire, even though the stubble in the nearby cornfield would have gone up like a torch with a small flame. There were sticks being rubbed, flints being bashed, tinder being collected - to no avail. We all ended up realising what rotten Neanderthals we would have made!
Thanks for answers so far. The bow drill was tried but no modern items like string were allowed. The rules sid work like a Neanderthal. Someone found nettle fibres made a sort of string though. A friend has told me Clematis wood is the best to use as it has high friction characteristics?

A prime example of the importance of life skills. All that education and limited usage for it. It's a good thing the situation wasn't survival oriented.

I guess there were no Boy Scouts at this party, as any of the Scouts from my Troop would have had the corn field blazing in under 10 minutes ;)
The "rubbing the sticks together" ruse takes forever.
You need a bow (a stick with a string tied across both ends), another stick and a block with some tinder to get a fire going without matches, or flint/steel

you're able to tell what the obtainable components are! shall we arise with something hypothetical, yet your question isn't phrased like that. in spite of this: do you recognize how plenty you may could dig out for a tiger seize great sufficient to offer up a tank? it would desire to be a minimum of 10 ft deep and a minimum of fifteen ft extensive, if not extra. besides, the tank could purely decrease back up and bypass around it. Boulder a l. a. Wile E. Coyote? That ingredient might could weigh many lots, your timing might could be ideal and your aim spot on. probably would not artwork. Your ideal wager, initiate a fire. ideally under and around the tank. a lot of gasoline and flammable components. The treads are heavy accountability plastic and metallic linkage, the fire might soften the plastic and it at once loses it fairly is mobility. The temperature might straight away head up, and if the fire gets to the ammunition or gasoline, you get a huge improve. not a good number of a undertaking on the M1 Abrams, using fact the gasoline and ammunition are sealed off from the group compartment, yet even then, it gets very uncomfortable very quickly.

you had gathered the necessary materials and things were dry. you just lacked the will to think and work hard at solving the challenge. if the flints were real, they always give off sparks. small little sparks but sparks. after that the initial kindling must be separated until it is like a fine ball of hair. with a couple of less fine balls to follow and corn stalks would should be added and working your way up to wood. blowing hard on the initial effort to ignite the first ball is crucial. gotta blow on it. a couple of people could have helped with that. the point is, you have to learn to do it just so and you have to believe you will succeed. may take two or more hours to learn. try again and post the results. obviously, its doable. lol

Use the wood sticks you mentioned and rub hard until they are really hot. Then you get a dry leaf and put it overy the hot areas and you blow on it. It is difficult to make it work, but the friction can turn into heat energy if you keep trying.

It can be done with a soda can and a bar of chocolate.
The chocolate polishes the bottom of any soda can to make it very shiny. The dome shape can give the sunlight a focal point similar to a magnifying glass. Focused on a piece of newspaper or tinder can produce a fire.
See the websites to find out more.
Also, if you were living in the north where ice were available, you could fashion a lens in the shape of a magnifying glass and reproduce the same effect. The 3rd link is for more on that.

Rub 2 dry sticks together you need patience though as it takes a while and you need to blow now and then to help it as it starts to smoke.

a small bow drill would have worked, it could easily start a fire in a few minutes
