Would you spend a year in a middle-eastern prison being tortured if you think you may be compensated later?
Four years after he was tortured in a Syrian prison, a Canadian resident (Maher Arar) has finally received an official apology and $10.5 million in compensation from the Canadian government for its role in the affair that caused him to be deported by US Immigration to Syria. He was detained and tortured there based on false information supplied to US officials by the Canadian government.
Regardless of right or wrong in the Arar case, here is my question:
If you knew you might be deported to a middle-eastern country to face torture for one year, but there was a high probability that you would get a $10M settlement for injustice upon returning, would you still go to?
Further to that, what would you do with the money afterwards? Would it be used for personal gain, helping to make a better community, or for revenge?
I'm glad to see that most people have the same point of view that I have. No amount of money is worth the year of utter suffering you would have to endure.
By the way, I am not "sick", just wanted to see everyone's opinion before providing my own one way or the other.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. If you are interested in more about the Arar case, take a look at this website:
For the record, I am not related nor do I have any vested interest...just an interested Canadian who would never want this to happen to me...
Just saw NP's comments and you made a good point. I was using the Arar case in the fact that he was sent to Syria where he was tortured, but you are absolutely right...Torture anywhere would be an issue, not just middle-eastern countries!

No, no amount of money is worth a year of captivity. Living is about enjoying life, and money isn't necessary to do that.

Well Steven I am watching the Arar compensation case as I type this response. And as so would have to state as his lawyer has said that there would be no amount of money that would be worth the torture. 10 million bucks is being split amongst his family also and not just Arar alone. Family is also being compensated for the silent torture that they had to endure. The money cannot and will not ever take away these nightmares that he will have to live with for the rest of his days. If I was to be deported as he was I do not believe that I would have the ability to face the injustices he faced so would not have any money awaiting for me on return as I would imagine that I would be returning in a box in all honesty.

I know the point isnt the location and rather if the monetary compensation makes up for the torture, but Ihave a question, why did you specify a middle-eastern country in our new hypothetical? Would compensation or torture be any different in another part of the world?

Hell yeah! If I knew that I would survive and live to see the settlement, I would go through it!
I would then spend the money on my family members that are deserving such as my poor old mother and take a world tour! Buy me three homes in the United States, one on the Pacific coast, another up in Northern-mid America, and then somewhere on the Hawaiian Islands! A nice car parked in each garage and the rest put away in stocks and bonds! Retirement!

Engaging question. $10M is a lot of money, but would it really be worth it in the face of possible suffering life-long after-effects of some of the most barbaric torture practices the world has ever seen. For me, no...what good is $10M without the use of your legs or genitals, especially if had to use a colostomy bag for the rest of your life?

I would never give up my body to be tortured for any amount of money. Besides that, my family and friends would be so worried. By the time you get the money and after being tortured for a year, you might as well put that money towards psychologist fees anyway!

To be honest, there have been times in my life where I might have considered it!! But being that I am female, I'm sure that part of the torture would be rape, by Lord knows how many nasty men. In that case $10. million doesn't even come close to being enough. ( And for a YEAR!!...
NO WAY JOSE!)

it ought to in all likelihood no longer finally end up with repayment, you'll only be achieved away with even as they have had their "relaxing". The Church did this to Giordano Bruno only some hundred years in the past for claiming the sunlight became a action picture star and the earth revolved round it. He became tortured ever unmarried day for 8 years. Then they determined he became now unlikely to recant, so as that they burnt him alive: his reward.

Absolutely not.
Being tortured would be horrific, and there would be a significant chance of being killed, or at least permanently injured in ways that would demean your quality of life way beyond what money could repair.
Besides, there are much easier ways to make $10 million in one year.

No way! It's not just the year of torture that he is being compensated for, its the effect on the rest of his life. The poor chap is going to spend the rest of his life haunted by those memories.

There would be no way I would do that. I would love the money and could have lots of fun with it but being tortured isnt the way to get it.
