Scratch off, or all state run lotto games, are a way the state makes money.
They make money because they entice people, like you, that there is some lucky chance that they will get rich.
But, if the lottery makes people rich, then the state must lose money, eh?
Consider a lottery in which the state promises a 100 dollar prize. They sell 200 tickets for a dollar each. You buy one. Somebody else wins the 100 dollar prize. You sigh and say you were not lucky that day.
But consider this: expected return. Multiply your chance of winning by the return value. For example, if you bought all the tickets, you would win. Your probability of winning is 1. The prize is 100. Muliply your prize by your probability, and you get 100. Your expected return is 100 dollars. Compare that with what you must pay to play (200 dollars). When the expected return is less than what you have to pay to play, it is better not to play. Now, when there are 200 tickets, and you have one, your chance of winning is 1 in 200. Multiply that by the prize (100) and you get 0.50. Your expected return is 50 cents. Compare that with what you paid to play (1.00). Still not a good bet.
So, next time you consider playing the lottery, look at the card or game rules. They will tell you the chances of winning. Multiply your chance of winning by the cost of the game. If that number is less than the prize, don't play, it ain't worth it.

Lotterys have been around for 1000's of years.
They rely on greed, want, material things
If you buy them do not spend more trhan 1 or 2 dollars a week
Mathematically it is IMPOSSIBLE to win!! Its just the dollar values make people forget and ignore reality
If you were to win, you really only need a small amount to live well
BUT to win $3 or $100 is a tease, how crazy can you be to be happy with some crumbs

I am so unlucky with the scratch offs....I used to win little bits on them until I moved here 10 years ago....since then I have NEVER had a single winner from the local shop! I started suspecting they were on a fiddle up there but then my fella gets them and he wins! (just small wins but still wins)....he says I jinx them and won't even let me in the room when he's scratchin em!!!! (they always end up losers when I'm in the room!!!!)
As for the lotto....again I used to have small wins a lot but not had nothing in years! (I don't recall breaking any mirrors or nothing to have incurred this bad luck!)
the most I ever won on the lottery was £100 for 4 numbers (that was about 12 years ago tho!!)
and the most I ever won on scratchcards was when I bought 2 and each was £25 (£50 win - again that was over 10 years ago)
I'm the same up the bingo - never ever win!! The one time I actually got all excited and got to shout out for a £1000 house I had the bad luck of 3 other people all shouting too, leaving me with £250 which I then had to split with my friend (so I got £125 for calling up on a £1000 house!!...typical!)
my friend who I used to go with (I stopped going coz of the bad luck)....we always agreed to split the winnings, she would NEVER win when I went but would always come home with big wins when I never went!!
AM I JINXED OR WHAT?!!

Their fun and easy...as long as you are not a gambling addict with the potential of dropping loads of money on them...they are well worth it. I have personally won $600 on one all the way down to the more common $1 or $2. We do them occasionally at work as a group for a little extra fun...but the odds are certainly not in your favor...as with any gambling...it is purely dumb luck and good timing (hopefully anyway)!
