a great way to create the illusion of more space is by painting your walls and furniture a similar color. making use of wall space instead of floor space by using a tall narrow chest of drawers or a tall armoire instead of a low, wide dresser. instead of using blocky night-tables, use small round-topped single pedestal legged tables. try to avoid all blocky, bottom-heavy pieces of furniture. use furniture that has slim, long legs. try to create vertical illusions as opposed to horizontal ones by thinking "tall and narrow" as opposed to "low and wide". if your mirrors, picture frames, window treatments, accents, furniture are taller than they are wide, you will not only be using your space more efficiently, but you will be fooling the eye into seeing a larger space. if you paint or paper in vertical stripes it would add a strong illusion of height and space. dont use strong contrast between furniture color and wall color--this really creates a sense of smallness. save the strong , bold contrast colors for accents. A tall skinny vase, a 1'wide by 5' high mirror, plants such as snake plant or cactus or bamboo canes with strong vertical dimension; these accents will all help enlarge your perception of the room.

I actually have a REALLY small room too. These are the things that really helped me redecorate my room:

    1. If you have a bedspread/ sheets with a design on them, try to get a rug and curtains that are one of the colors on the design.

    2. If you are on a very lowwww budget, I recommend IKEA. Go to ikea.com, and you will find very nice furniture for a very nice price! Also, IKEA furniture is designed for small spaces.

    3. Outlet Malls: The Container Store, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel. All of these are SUPER expensive, but the outlets have lots of good bargains.

    4. Find a paint color that you love!!! And that matches with your carpet, or hardwood flooring. Make sure that your curtains match the wall.

    5. You want there to be an area in your room, preferabley the middle that is sort of clear of furniture. This makes the room feel bigger.

    7. Use mirrors. They make places look bigger, and also maybe get one with a frame to match with your stuff.

    6. Last of all, for your color palette, use colors that are adjacent on the color wheel, and then get a lot of white furniture too. For example: Blue and Green. Blue and Purple. Green and Yellow. Then have like your dresser and bookshelf and part of your desk be white!

PS: If IKEA doesn't work out, Target is a good bet too.

  • Use a 'day bed' which doubles as a small couch... if there isn't a cupboard, use a small dresser and a small armoire for hanging things that need to be hung... keep the furnishings simple and few. Only put into the room, the things you need absolutely... the rest can be had in another room like the living, family or recreation room...

    Good luck!

By designing big! Put sheer material up on the ceiling to create a canopy effect. Use a large mirror on one wall to give the illusion of a larger room. Don't put a lot of clutter in the room. Use several big decorating pieces such as a vase or tropical plant.

A great way is to install shelves, take advantage of space under your bed for extra storage. The following article helped me with my small apartment in Brooklyn
