Does anyone use dog backpacks?

I bought an Outward Bound doggie backpack for my 48lb Doberman. I put a book and a bottle of water in each pouch but it seems too heavy. We walk every morning so I won't know until tomorrow if it hurts him. Is it possible to weigh him down too much?

Yes, it's possible to weigh him down too much. Just like any other couch potato, you have to let the dog work up to the load.

I don't know what the vet's recommend but my own yardstick is 1/8 the dog's weight is maximum for trips over 2 hours, 1/4 the dog's weight for trips under one hour. You let the dog decide if he's up for more weight after he gets used to this.

Lastly, balance the weight. Check bag for anything that protrudes that could chaff. Check paws and remember to hydrate more often, dog's carrying a load now.
