American Literature is a huge topic that is not easy to categorize. Authors have tried to write "the Great American Novel" and have not been able to because America is diverse.

The variety of cultures, backgrounds, lifestyles, and beliefs are reflected in the diversity of the literature.

There are Historical novels, African American novels, Satire, Mystery, Romance, Adventure, Fantasy, Political, Humor, Young Adult, and Crime novels. William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, and Mark Twain wrote about the American south. Zane Grey wrote about the Wild West. Toni Morrison writes novels about the black experience. Sara Paretsky writes detective novels. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about colonial America. Mario Puzo wrote about the mafia in New York. Amy Tan writes from a Chinese American point of view. John Updike writes about American small town Protestant middle class. Tom Robbins, John Irving, John Steinbeck, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau are all American novelists. Chinese author Pearl S. Buck, bisexual author John Cheever, civil rights activist Rita Mae Brown, prolific author Catherine Coulter, satirist Peter De Vries, horror writer Stephen King, Russian born Ayn Rand, socialist Upton Sinclair, are all American authors.

My impression of American literature is it is diverse as America.
