Heartburn in Dogs, is it possible?

I believe my Boxer has heartburn. I have Acid Reflux and I know the signs, which is why I think my dog has it. Do dogs get Heartburn? You can hear it when it happens to her and it seems to happen every day. She looks like she is burping up liquid as she makes a slight burping noise, then starts licking the inside of her mouth like crazy. Sometimes it makes her get up and move around, I can see her discomfort. What can help with this? Can dogs take Antacids? She already has a sensitive stomach and has to eat special food..

yep dogs can get oesophageal reflux. If you think your dog has it you need to get it checked by a vet as there are several causes and some are not nice

    1. Megaoesophagus - need to feed from a height

    2. Slow mobility in stomach/gut (there is medication to help)

    3. Cancer of throat/stomach/intestines

    4. Other stomach issues.

They may give medication to try first and if this doesn't help then may require an endoscope.

Have your vet take a look. If it all checks out consider changing her food to a more holistic choice like Innova or Canidae brands.

Interesting topic though. Never even came to mind that dogs can get heartburn.

I've been breeding Boxers for over 15 years and I can tell you that your girl needs her diet and possibly her feeding routine changed. Heartburn and sensitive stomach are common in Boxers who are kept on lower end commercial dog foods. Your girl is telling you something, and that is "what you are feeding me is hurting my belly". Listen to her!

Join the BARFingBoxers Yahoo Group http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/BARFingBoxers to learn about the best diet for Boxer dogs. Countless Boxer owners have switched to this method of feeding, and their dogs love it. I've been using this diet for my dogs for many years. There simply isn't a better way.

In the meantime use a tablespoon or two of mineral oil in place of your antacid to make her feel better during an episode. Be careful not to force mineral oil down her lungs. Simply mix with a bit of natural yougurt and let her lap it up.

I wouldnt think a dog could get heartburn unless it ate some spicy food or something like that........you can probably give it some antacid but you should ask someone that knows first and only a little bit!

Definately! A friend of mine's Sheltie was just hospitalized because her esophageal damage had become so bad she couldn't eat without throwing it back up and she got really sick. She's now taking Nexium, yes human meds Nexium.

It is probably her sensitive stomach causing the issues. Is her bowl raised off the floor to make it easier for her to eat? Also, I would feed her in smaller portions to try not cause the upset stomach. Ask your vet about tagamet for her.
