Which Tax software is better; turbotax or taxcut(from H&R Block) ?"?

I will need to fill out a schedule C and I itemize because I have several deductions.

I have used turbotax in the past and liked it, but I noticed that Taxcut was much cheaper and wanted someone's opinion before I purchased this year's software.

Update:

I do not have any investments so that is not an issue. I don't ewantto use an accountant or a CPA because i am very comfortable doing my own taxes. I have done them for many years and this is not te first year I have filed a schedule C. i just want to know if TAX Cut is just like Turbo tax or if turbotax is better.

Turbo tax will not let you down. H-R Block is tied to their business and they are not interested in your best interests! H-R Block will not allow the full process of deductions and other advantages without getting you into their fees and business.

I have used both programs, and find them equal. Never had a problem with either program. Used H&R Taxcut for my own this year, used Turbotax for a few others that i prepared this year for other people. I really can't see a big difference in the two. Hope this helps and happy taxes!

Even though I will graduate with my Bachelor's in Accounting in May, I would definitely recommend you go to a CPA or tax accountant to have your taxes done. It should run you less than around $200, and the peace of mind cannot have a price tag put on it.

I also have a side business for which I have to file a Schedule C, and although I am pretty tax savvy, TurboTax doesn't always ask questions in a way you are always confident in answering. Last year for fun I did TurboTax to the best of my ability, and I still came out $1000 lower than my accountant. That's $1000 I would not have received on my refund. Take out the $200 I paid her, and I still came out $800 ahead.

TaxAct seems to be the most cost effective of the bunch. I switched to it last year. I have used H&R Bock(taxcut) for many years but the price was getting ridiculous, for 1040, Schedule A and D and State. I considered Turbo Tax, but that cost more than H&R Block. First year you switch is a bit more time consuming.

i've always used taxcut and found it to be an easy to use program.

the only thing i've found tedious with the software is reporting the sale of investments, and for these I've had to do more calcs by hand than I would like. there is apparently an add-in that I could buy to TurboTax that would make tracking capital gains easier, which i havent used

Yeah, if you can read and understand your own business, do your own taxes. CPAs don't do anything special. They plug in numbers in software just like you're going to do. It takes them about 10 minutes to crank out that $200 return.
