The government is planning to track motorists in the UK and charge them a tax per mileage. Opinions please.?
The government is planning to scrap road tax in favour of a tax per mileage. This is another unfair tax on motorists. I personally spend £175 on road tax, over £1000 a year in fuel tax and pay congestion and toll charges.
I understand that global warming is an issue, and one that worries me greatly, but this is not the answer. I am not opposed to public transport, but it needs to be substancially improved before it is a viable alternative to private transportation. Example, driving to work takes me around 30 mins and costs £5 for the round trip. Public transport, takes over 2 hours and costs £6 return.
I also have issue with having my vehicle fitted with a tracking device. I have nothing to hide, but I feel very uncomfortable with the idea of big brother following my every move.
The gov' make huge amounts of money from motorists. With this they should improve the roads and research alternative fuels. Improve the flawed railways and get trucks off the road.
What do you think?
You can vote against this new taxation system by going to http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax and adding your name to the petition. The petition is open until 20/02/07. Voice your opinon people.

I find anything this mickey mouse goverment do is an outrage sureley the public can see that any tax or whatever they wish to call it on the motorist will incur the same on the haulage contractor thus making all goods more expensive thus making the cost of living higher thus making the average weekly wage higher until we spiral out of control and crash and burn all because the goverment want there pound of flesh and whats the easiest target the motorist and the haulage contractor NEED I SAY ANY MORE

The up keep of the roads has to be paid for some way, so if road tax is to be scrapped, what are the alternatives? Surely it is better that the people who actually use the roads pay for this, if you use them a lot then you pay a higher amount than those who do not use them a lot. What concerns me more, is exactly how the government intend to collect this money. Some people are notorious for not paying bills that are sent to them, and this being an unpopular tax means that it will have more than a fair share of those people. That usually means that the courts will be full, and enormous costs will be involved in the collection of unpaid taxes. Another point regarding road tax, it is an excellent way to ensure that people have insurance and M.O.T. as it has to be valid before they can tax a car. I live in an area where public transport is almost non existent, so I cannot manage without a car. My feelings are that it is yet another way of `punishing` the motorist financially. Everything around us is taxed for something, I`m sure that the government think that I go to work ,solely to pay them taxes( which of course I do !)

I too have objections to being tracked everywhere I go. I'd be prepared to bet, though, that as soon as they come up with a device to do this, someone else will find a way around it!
It's about time they rethought the whole taxation strategy, they've squeezed the last drop out of the motorist, now they need to look elsewhere.

i believe global warming is due to sun spots
as the earths orbits around the sun it tends to follow a constantly changing path. i believe the earths path around the sun has brought it too close to the sun for now and that is the reason there is global warming now
in another decade or so the situation will change. the government should not hastly react to make life misrable for motorists because of a natural occurance
i'm definately voting against this tax per mileage thing

I hear ya brother....that's total BS. we don't have mile tax or anything yet here in the USA but do pay a hefty tax on the gas itself. Rumor here is they will be charging for GPS navigation usage here soon, or least charge you per usage or tax it somehow.
Nothing more than big government wanting more money cause they waste so much in corruption.
I don't blame you for not wanting to be tracked either....they already track people here by cell phone and other means. soon it will be common place to "check in" somewhere when we are out and about I am sure.

Yet another way of taxing the public!
Nothing to do with global warming, all to do with fleecing.
About time this greedy, half baked government was kicked out!

not sure??? i like this idea in the way that all people pay, unlike some people who go round without paying road tax so at least they will have to pay it. but on the other hand most people will probably find that they will pay more in the end?
