What do you need for Xbox live (360)?
The only reason I need it for is to update games with firmware patches. Can I use Xbox live silver for that or do I need gold?
If you can use silver, then how much $ is silver? How long does the silver that comes with the System last, a month? Forever? I have a labtop that use a wireless router in my house. Can i plug a Ethernet cable into my labtop and use it for Xbox live?

Silver is free as long as you have the internet, Gold is the $ one. Xbox Live can update it with silver, so no need to worry about Gold. Gold you can play online with GAMES. Silver you can chat, send messages and have a friend list, and yes you can use your cable to your laptop for xbox live.

yes the silver subscription is free and allows updates for 360 and original games to be played on 360 console one thing though this will only work if you have a hard drive (premium system or bought separately) you can also talk to friends using headset and camera on silver subscription but all said and done you should upgrade to gold as this will offer a lot more game play and longevity to any games you have. the on line gaming is additive and great fun. as for using xboxlive through your computer check out this link
